If your golf ball keeps curving wildly to the right (for right-handed players), you’re not alone. The dreaded slice is one of golf’s most common problems — but also one of the easiest to fix with the right guidance. At Keele Golf Centre, our PGA-qualified coaches work with golfers every day to identify and correct the real causes of slicing.
🎯 What Causes a Slice?
A slice happens when the club face is open to the swing path at impact. This means the face is pointing right (for a right-hander) relative to the direction the club is travelling. The result? Sidespin that sends the ball curving off target.
Common causes include:
-
A weak grip (hands too far turned towards the target)
-
An outside-to-in swing path
-
Poor weight transfer or posture
-
Trying to “steer” the ball rather than swinging freely
🏌️♂️ How to Start Fixing It
-
Check your grip: Turn your lead hand slightly so you can see two or three knuckles when you look down.
-
Shallow your swing path: Try feeling like you’re swinging in-to-out through impact.
-
Focus on rotation: Turn your body fully through the shot instead of just using your arms.
-
Work with feedback: Use alignment sticks or video analysis to see what’s really happening.
